Fish to Birds is a six-person a cappella vocal improvisation ensemble. We create music spontaneously as a group. We are primarily jazz musicians but have international backgrounds and influences. We have various forms we often work within, but nothing is rehearsed. Sometimes complete songs are created on the spot; sometimes more avant-garde compositions or soundscapes emerge. We may utilize spoken word and movement; we may include storytelling, on-the-spot harmonizing and lyric composition; we may incorporate fragments of existing songs and compositions. But the main thing we do is listen, create and exist in the moment. We respond to changes in each other, the audience and whatever room we might be in to follow the line of the music. We may utilize body and mouth percussion and create bass and horn lines to create a more traditional-sounding piece with rhythm and groove; we may wordlessly sing and create a tone poem. We may involve the audience; we may utilize humor; not all members may sing at once. Whatever we do, I guarantee we won't know what it is ahead of time!
